How to get your basic skincare routine right

Easy ways to refresh your skincare routine whatever the time of year

A fresh season is the perfect opportunity to reset and rethink your skincare routine. Great skin starts with mastering the essentials: cleansing, repairing, and protecting. When you know what to use and when to use it, these foundational steps can transform your complexion.

IN THE MORNING

Always moisturise

Whatever the time of year, your skin always needs hydration but don’t go overboard and use creams that are too heavy for your skin. A lightweight, gel-based, or water-based moisturiser that provides hydration without clogging pores is always a safe bet. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid to maintain moisture balance and keep your skin dewy without feeling greasy. Water-based gel moisturisers with hyaluronic acid are a safe bet as are lightweight creams with ceramides for gentle hydration.

Exfoliate for renewal

Gentle exfoliation helps to reveal brighter skin, unclog pores, and improve the absorption of skincare products. Opt for chemical exfoliants like AHAs (glycolic acid or lactic acid) or BHAs (salicylic acid) for effective yet gentle resurfacing. Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week to avoid overdoing it. Use products like glycolic acid toners or pads and salicylic acid serums for acne-prone skin.

Protect with SPF

UV rays can cause premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin damage year-round, but their intensity increases at this time. Use a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 daily, even on cloudy days. Opt for lightweight, non-greasy formulas that work well under makeup. Key ingredients to look for are Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for mineral-based protection and antioxidants like vitamin C for added defense against free radicals. Go for a lightweight SPF 30+ moisturiser or sunscreens with antioxidants and tinted sunscreens for added coverage.

Add brightening ingredients

Vitamin C serums and creams are a fantastic way to not only even out skin tone, but also boost collagen, fade dark spots, enhance your natural glow, and brighten the complexion—pair vitamin C with niacinamide to strengthen your skin barrier and reduce redness. Go for Vitamin C serums with 10-20% concentration and niacinamide-based creams for soothing hydration.

IN THE EVENING

Cleanse properly

It's important to choose the right cleanser for your evening routine. Foaming washes don’t go deep enough to reach inside the pores. It’s not just about removing makeup but also clearing away SPF and pollution, which can degrade the skin. Cream or balm cleansers, which can be thoroughly massaged into the skin give a deeper cleanse and more effective results.

Hydrate inside and out

Water replenishes your skin, while oils provide nourishment—and it’s important to understand the distinction. Every skin type, including oily skin, needs hydration to maintain balance. Whether you choose a hydrating sheet mask, serum, or cream infused with hyaluronic acid, ensure your skin is thoroughly hydrated daily. Proper hydration does more than enhance plumpness, glow, and smoothness; it supports your skin’s overall health and functionality. Put simply, you can never overdo hydration.

Target seasonal skin concerns and repair

Allergy-prone skin can lead to redness and irritation. So look for calming ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or Centella Asiatica to heal and repair the skin at night. Oilier skin has increased oil production so introduce a balancing toner with witch hazel or tea tree oil to help mop up excess oils while you sleep. Oh and don’t forget retinol. It’s the gold-standard (and scientifically approved) ingredient to reverse skin aging and helps normalise the skin. Use it at night as it makes your skin sun sensitive if you use it during daytime. The trick is to start low and go slow to acclimatise your skin to it and avoid the infamous redness, irritation, and flakiness that retinol novices usually face.
