Reinterpretation of the iconic paper cuts made by the beloved fairy tale author H.C. Andersen.
Hidden messages challenge us and can shape us as human beings over time.
More than 100 years ago, H.C. Andersen sat and made his adventurous paper cuts, and with this feeling Charlotte Lavian designed this poster collection of H.C. Andersen’s famous paper cuts.
The posters are based on trend colors and include small unique quotes that originate from H.C. Andersen’s own collections.
About H.C. Andersen:
Hans Christian Andersen, born 1805 in Denmark, is one of the immortals of world literature.
The fairy tales he wrote, such as “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Princess and the Pea”, remain classics of the genre and are like no others written before or since.
As today, in Hans Christian Andersen’s day opinions were also divided about the tall, gangly person from the province. He might not have fitted in exactly, but he also insisted on sticking out.
Hans Christian Andersen was something special: full of contradictions, nuances and facets.
Throughout his life, the poet devoted his enormous talent to a crucial task: understanding oneself and what it means to be human.
His life and art make the world a richer, deeper and more wonderful place.
In order to amuse his friends and their children, Hans Christian Andersen made his paper cuts.
The paper cuts were not only meant to be a pleasure for the eye but also a challenge for the mind.
Often there was a hidden meaning in them - in the same way that we know it from the fairy tales:
on the surface it could amuse, in depth it would amaze. Some of the paper cuts are purely picture puzzles or rebuses, others are icons combined to represent a linguistic symbol.
The double meaning hidden in the paper cuts demonstrates the fairy tale author’s way of thinking.
It reveals an utmost modern way of thinking, using the word not as a media to create meaning but as a material of meaning itself.
