5 hacks to master the art of layering

From fail-safe denim to tonal shades and everyday basics, here’s the lowdown on how to layer this spring.

Denim is always a good idea

This fashion stalwart always makes a great layering piece. Whether you wear it from head to toe, double denim, or throw on a denim jacket under a lightweight coat or trench to add an extra layer of warmth should you need it, denim is the ultimate wardrobe staple. If you don’t own a denim jacket and shirt, invest now as they are the easiest pieces to layer up with. Whatever wash you go for this season, the key to layering stylishly is in the proportions. If you are wearing wide leg jeans to work, then tuck your denim shirt in, pair with a denim blazer and ankle boots. If it’s a more casual look, you can’t go wrong with straight leg jeans, a white tee, a denim jacket, and sneakers. Don’t fear doubling up with different washes as right now, double denim is a big trend for spring.

Get creative with your basics

Transeasonal times are always the hardest to dress for. That’s when you need to look towards your hardworking wardrobe staples to see you through shifting temperatures in style. The easiest way to dress going into spring is to turn to your basics and be conscious of your styling. By this, we mean layering up and down so you can slip between temperatures with ease. For work, think of a white shirt styled over a crisp white tank, paired with black wide-leg trousers and a blazer. Switch to a denim shirt and sneakers and it will take you from boardroom to a casual day around town. A lightweight knit in a neutral shade can be worn from day to night whether it's over a slip dress or under a blazer for office days.

Turtleneck like a pro

Layering a turtleneck under, well anything not only adds warmth on cooler days but it’s a chic spring look that can easily be taken off when the temperatures rise. Wear under shirts, dresses, and oversized tailoring, and invest in super-fine, quality fabrics that don’t look bulky. A turtleneck under a cosy hoodie on weekends will look cool with jeans, sneakers, and a lightweight trench.

Embrace tonal layering

There is something so chic about dressing in one colour from top-to-toe. Not only is it relatively easy to achieve, assuming you have enough clothes in one shade, but it has a simplicity and coolness to it. This season it's all about wearable neutral hues of beige and grey. The key things to consider when layering in the one shade is to mix textures which adds contrast but keeps it interesting. For example, pair a cashmere knit with a leather midi skirt, a blazer over the top, and ankle boots. Just whatever you do, keep it in the same shade.

Easy day-to-night

Jeans and a nice top have always been the staple of after-dark dressing, but who says your favourite eveningwear must be reserved for after 17:00 especially as the days get warmer. The easiest way to do it, ‘Tran seasonal style’ is to layer a crisp white t-shirt under your top, especially if it's strapless or a fitted style. Then you can wear it to the office and easily slip into those after-work drinks. Add light-blue denim into the mix and an oversized leather jacket and it will take you anywhere.
